Antique Indian Door Hanging/Toran, embroidered

Antique Indian Door Hanging/Toran, embroidered

DescriptionThis is an antique Toran or door hanging from Saurashtra in Gujarat south of Kutch in India. Traditionally this was hung over the door of the most important room in the house. It is made of cotton, and embroidered in floss silk and mirror work. It is oblong in shape and has seven hanging panels, which are all embroidered finely in different designs, some in mirror work and others with intricate embroidered patterns. Stitches used include satin stitch, herringbone, and chain stitch. It measures 113 cms x 69 cms. ( 44.5 x 27 ins.) and originally had three hanging loops on the top edge. Only one remains (I have attached temporary green loops for display). There is some wear and missing stitches in the main panel and a few of the mirror circles are also missing. The hanging panels are in good condition, all different and good examples of this type. Although worn, this is a good example of a very traditional embroidery which is less seen these days.
