Antique Straw Work Case, early 19th Century

Antique Straw Work Case, early 19th Century

DescriptionThis is a very well preserved example of a Straw Work Case which dates from the early part of the 19th Century. These are often described as Napoleonic, and made by French prisoners of war, but they were also produced by others as well. The colours are excellent and the condition is very good with very little loss of straw. It is decorated in traditional geometric style in very dark blue and the natural straw colour and other colours are introduced at the ends (green) and inside - dark red, green, magenta and purple. The inside is also decorated with a small chequer board design inside at one end and striped at the other. It measures 10 cms. long, 6 cms. wide and 3 cms. deep. The case is in two sections which slide together in quite a tight fit. It may have been for cigars or needlework tools. There are some tiny chips of straw missing at the edges of the two sections but this seems to be all of the damage. This is a good collector’s item in better condition than that usually found.
