Antique School Patching Sampler, c 1900

Antique School Patching Sampler, c 1900

DescriptionThis is a small Dutch patching sampler, probably a school girl’s work in strong cotton fabric probably calico. It shows four examples of patches let into the fabric with surrounding hems, one of the selvedge edge and two on the hemmed edge, and one in the middle. It is beautifully made with the tiniest of hemming stitches and the girl has embroidered her initials “Th K” on the top corner. Tis sampler dates from the beginning of the 20th Century and is a simple example of what school children were expected to produce - work of a very high standard, teaching them a skill which would be useful to them as adults, either in the home or to earn a living.
