Antique Victorian Embroidered Handkerchief

DescriptionThis is a beautiful example of an antique handkerchief, of the Victorian era with extensive whitework embroidery around the edge and in the corners. The design consists of dainty sprays of flowers and leaves and extends on all sides into the narrow border of Valenciennes lace. The name Gertrude is embroidered on one corner. It is pale cream in colour. There are some holes in the fabric, which can be seen in the photographs, but this is such an excellent example of the fine intricate embroidery of the period that it is still a collectable item. The handkerchief measures about 17 1/2 inches (44.5 cms,) square and because of its size could be termed a neckerchief.
