Sold Items, Total : 9

This is an antique wooden clamp used for winding wool, silk or cotton for knitting, embroidery, crochet, and tatting, dating from the first half of the 19th Century. They sometimes came in pairs and were used to hold the skein while a ball was wound by hand. It is nicely turned with a boxwood finial in the shape of an acorn at the top. It is in very good condition, but of course with the usual signs of wear. The wooden screw although antique is probably not the original. The winding clamp measures 26 cms. long with the screw fastened tight and 8 cms, wide at the widest part. These clamps are less seen these days.

This is a small Victorian emery bag (used to clean needles before the days of stainless steel,by pushing them into it). Dating from the early 19th Century, it is made of dark pink velvet and has a silk calyx and tiny running stitches as seeds. It measures just 1 1/2 inch long (4 cms.). There is a small wire loop at the top to attach a ribbon. The silk calyx is a little worn but it is in good condition for its age. it is an attractive example of its type and would be an interesting addition to a collection.

Antique Strawberry Emery Bag for needle cleaning
This is a lovely example of a 19th century German silver thimble. It is plain in the main part but has a wide decorated gold coloured band round the rim, of swirls alternating with small cabuchon stones in turquoise, black and orange. There is a small flower at the top of it. The thimble is in excellent condition, except that a couple of the retaining claws are missing from two of the stones. The thimble bears the 825 silver mark, the maker’s mark A.B. and some others that I cannot decipher. This is a very good specimen and an excellent addition to any collection or as a gift for the keen needlewoman. Reference "The Collector's Guide to Thimbles" by Bridget McConnel.

Silver Thimble by Charles Horner, 1916.
This is a wonderful example of a wool winder or swift made of mahogany. It stands 27 inches high on a broad circular base and revolves easily, with an extension of over 28 inches. It is finished at the top with a beautifully turned knob. It folds up very neatly, as can be seen from the photographs. Two of the slats have been restored, new silk ribbon ties them together at top and bottom, and the copper wire attaching the slats replaced. The wool winder is in excellent condition and is immanently usable, or for use as a piece of decorative and historical interest. Please contact me with regard to postal charges.
